Housetraining is habitually the number one priority for a good number of families when they get a new puppy. Very few puppies will be housetrained as soon as you get them. There are two very useful methods you can use to housetrain your puppy and you can use just one of them or you can even use them simultaneously.
The first way to train your puppy is to be very wary and watch his actions. Puppies will squat to urinate and defecate. You must watch your puppy very closely and as soon as he starts to change his stance then scoop him up and take him to his chosen spot. If you happen to fail to see the sign and he has an upset, you should never reprimand him as he is still just learning and he does not know what is expected of him yet. Scolding him will just upset him needlessly.
Also, if you miss the signs completely and you find an mishap later it will not do you any good to rebuke him them. Dogs cannot reason and they do not recognize what they are being scolded for after the fact. They can only relate to what is happening right now. If you reprimand your puppy it will just confound and startle him and cause you more discord in the future.
The second way to housetrain your puppy is to use a newspaper method. Start by covering the whole floor of the space where your puppy runs around. He will learn that the paper is an okay place to do his business. Gradually lessen the newspapers in the room, making it smaller and smaller until there is only a small spot left. Then you can take that small piece of newspaper outside to his chosen spot and he will start going there.
Either or both of these methods can be very effective. You can use both methods at the same time by using observation during the day and the newspaper at night or if you are sidetracked by other things at specific times of the day you can use the newspaper then while using awareness at other times.
Sometimes during housetraining, a puppy will go through a stage where he seems to regress and not recall what he has learned. This is a exasperating experience but it is ordinary so do not punish him for it.
Just use predictable dog behavior to get him back on track. A dog will infrequently dirty his own room. So use a crate and make it cozy so he thinks of it as his own. Let him snooze in the crate and immediately as you let him out, take him to his chosen spot. He will need to alleviate himself right away and he will understand to only do it in that spot.
Housetraining does not need to be daunting or nerve-racking. Either or both of these two methods along with some tolerance can have your new puppy housetrained before you know it. - 20763
