Does Your Rabbit Need Better Care?

When you are looking to adopt a rabbit, of course you are going to want to take good care of her, but do you know what that means? Rabbits are relatively easy animals to care for, but there is still some basic information that you need to be aware of. They are very tame and if they are well socialized, you'll find that they can be wonderfully friendly. Make sure that you handle your rabbit daily and don't be upset if your rabbit doesn't care to cuddle. Most rabbits prefer to sit next to their owners and you'll discover that this can be quite rewarding as well.

Food is an important part of care, so lets take a look at what your rabbit needs. They are much like people in that they like a varied diet. They will really enjoy different treats. Pellets are a great start, but your rabbit will also need vegetables and hay.

You should avoid feeding your rabbit grass directly from outside. It can cause illness from parasites and pesticides. Vegetables are great for your rabbit, but they should be limited. Rabbits love sweet things, but you should not overload their diet with fruits and dry food should also be given in reasonable amounts.

Your rabbit needs good housing. It should be roomy enough for your rabbit to feel comfortable and to also provide room for a litter box and the food and water dishes.

It is best to choose a cage that does not have a wire bottom. Your rabbit can injure his feet on a wire bottom cage. You should look into putting some type of material on the bottom if you do choose a wire bottom cage. You also need to provide your rabbit with cardboard, paper or chew toys so he can chew.

Rabbits may appear to be lazy and prefer to lay around, but they still need exercise. You can let your rabbit roam about freely or you can provide supervised playtime.

If your rabbit goes outside to play then you must supervise and keep him in a safe area. You want him to get about 2 to 3 hours of exercise a day. This will ensure he is fit and stop destructive behavior.

When you want to take good care of your new rabbit you must make sure that you are doing all the right things. Food, the proper cage and good exercise are a great start. You also should learn about proper coat care. A regular brushing works. Another consideration is with older rabbits who may need further special care. - 20763
