Stone foundation wall issues - Decades of water infiltration will cause decay to the stone foundation walls. The result can be bulged walls from unnecessary static pressure or settlement of the foundation, deteriorated mortar joints from unnecessary moister or loose stones and missing mortar joints from straightforward aging and movement.

Bulged walls - This problem presents the biggest hurdle for a building owner depending on the degree and seriousness of the prominent problem and the location within the foundation wall. Generally though, a portion of the foundation wall can be removed and reconstructed but proper shoring must be in place to support the building load before you proceed. This should not be out of the range of an experienced mason contractor and you must seek their advice.

Loose stones and missing mortar - these things are simple to remedy. Loose stones should be taken out and re-set with fresh mortar. Care should be taken not to enfeeble any critical support areas within the foundation. If you believe an area of loose stone is carrying a beam load or other loads then consult a professional for advice.

Holes and missing joints can be filled with mortar or tuck-pointed to help tighten the foundation walls. Any brand of masons mix available at the local box store should be adequate.

After you have completed the repairs discussed above you may wish to apply another layer of cement stucco. This could help to smooth out defects, close small holes, 'stiffen' the walls surface and hopefully provide some defense against water leaks.

Elections of recent years have seen this as a very hot subject and with the White House stating publicly that marriage can only involve a man and a woman, not same-sexes, many states have been very reluctant to sanction same-sex marriages. Those states are, in alphabetical order: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, and Vermont. The District of Columbia also recognizes same-sex unions and the Governor of New Hampshire has promised openly that he will soon sign a bill permitting same-sex unions. This is a major victory for the supporters of the movement.

Although many states have not allowedf same-sex marriage, there are states which are sitting on the fence discussing the topic. Many couples who are struggling for their rights have argued that there is just no difference in the manner they run their households compared with their heterosexual counterparts. They have also pointed out that while they may be with a partner who is the same sex as them, they do still love their partner and should have the legal right to marry them too.

This has always been a contentious issue, and likely will continue to be a hot topic for several years in the future. While the issues rage within the states and at the national level, it will more than likely be quite a long time before the gay and lesbian rights groups are able to truly declare a triumph for their cause. Nevertheless, there is some solace to be taken in the small triumphs as they occur, and another Governor of a state being willing to permit a civil union is at least a step in the direction of triumph.

However, the fact is that the views of the individual states usually reflect the opinions of the President. With a President in office who is a strict opponent of same-sex marriage as well as civil union, it is unlikely to allow much room for many more victories until a more accommodating, or rather liberal, President is in the White House. Only time will tell what President Obama's views are.

After the bill has passed through all the legal channels of the state, it could go into effect as early as the next year, much to the joy of the New Hampshire residents, who have been waiting patiently. Each state that gives this right to its residents opens the door a little more to other states to become more tolerant.
